Q: How important is the name of a business? Should the name of a business reflect what the business does or is it better to come up with something catchy and easy to remember?
– Randy P.

A: What’s in a name? When it comes to your business, Randy, a lot more than you might think. In fact, deciding on a business name is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. The right business name can help you rise above the crowd while the wrong business name can leave you trampled in the rush.

With the economy in a slump and competition on the rise, now more than ever it is important that you put considerable thought into coming up with the perfect name for your business.

Unfortunately, this is a task that is easier said than done. It seems like all the good business names are either married or… no wait, that’s a different subject, but the analogy holds true.

We live in an age when a business called “The Body Shop” might repair wrecked cars or sell skintight jeans to teenagers, so before you send your letterhead to the printer, consider the following points to help you select the business name that’s right for you.

The first thing you should do is conduct a little research to determine if the name is already in use by someone else. You would be surprised at how many entrepreneurs forget to research this point and open a business with a name that is already in use. Check with the county clerk and the secretary of state to make sure the name isn’t already licensed for use or incorporated with the state. Also check with the U. S. Patent and Trademark office to see if the name is already trademarked, i. e. , owned, by someone else. Using another company’s trademarked name exposes you to legal action by the trademark owner. Even if your name is just similar to the trademarked name, you may find yourself in court defending your right to use the name. And odds are it’s a battle you will lose.

If the name you choose is not in use, you should immediately reserve the name with the secretary of state (if you plan on incorporating) and apply for a trademark to ensure your legal ownership. If you do not trademark the name someone can come along later and attempt to steal the name out from under you. Imagine spending years building up your business only to have some upstart trademark the name and engage you in a legal battle over rightful ownership. This is one fight you don’t need, especially when the hassle could have been easily avoided with a few bucks and a few forms.

Another important thing to consider is the domain name for your business. The domain name is the website address a customer will use to find you on the Web. Is the domain name for your business name available? If not, is there a domain similar to the business name you’re considering?

You will undoubtedly discover that securing a suitable domain name is actually harder than choosing a business name. Most logical domain names are already reserved, but you might get lucky. Keep in mind that domain names should be short and descriptive, and preferably have the . com or . net extension. You can use other extensions (I’ve even used the “. to” extension on occasion) if necessary, just keep in mind that you will need to put forth a little extra marketing effort to promote the website address as people typically assume a . com extension as the norm. Whatever you do, don’t use a domain name that is a confusing amalgam of letters and numbers that is hard to remember and even harder for your customer to type in.

One good way to approach the task of naming a business is to do so from your customer’s point of view. Your business name should clearly define your offering and communicate your message to customers. Put yourself in your customer’s shoes for a moment. If you were looking for a business that provides your product or service, what would you expect that business to be called? If you were in the market for computer parts, for example, wouldn’t you look for a business that has “computer parts” reflected in the business name? Jim’s Computer Parts may not sound as snazzy as Jim’s Electronics Emporium, but snazzy doesn’t pay the bills. Happy customers who quickly identify you as the source of their purchase do.

The name of your business can also spark subconscious reactions in a customer that may drive them to you or drive them away. Words like quality, complete, executive, best, low-cost, and on time often spark positive reactions in the mind of the consumer. Words like cheap, discount, and used tend to create negative emotions. You’ll notice that no one claims to sell used cars anymore, but the dealer lots are loaded with vehicles that are “previously owned. ”

Finally, let’s talk about things to avoid. Experts agree that you should avoid using generic terms like enterprise, corporation, partners, and unlimited as part of your everyday business name. These terms are fine for the legal business entity name, but are often too unclear for everyday use. Can you tell me what any of these companies do: ABC Corporation, Big Dog Enterprises, M&B Partners, and Discounts Unlimited sell? I didn’t think so.

Also avoid abstract names like Yahoo, Google, Monster and Flip Dog (I am not going to list the names of the numerous local high tech firms that have bucked this rule :o). Abstract names will require a subtitle to explain what the business does or an expensive marketing campaign that brands the name into the minds of consumers. Unless you have deep pockets, I suggest you go with a name that describes your business at first glance and leave abstraction to the likes of Cher.

Finally, you should avoid hokey names, unless of course, you are starting a hokey business. Crazy Dave’s Stereo Shop is a great name if the business is really run by Crazy Dave and his personality is exploited in the marketing of the business.

However, if you want to be taken serious, then give your business a serious name.

Would you go to Crazy Dave’s House of Dentistry?

Neither would I.

Here’s to your success.

Many amateur golfers spend lots of money buying new golf equipment and very little money on golf lessons. They have the impression that the new equipment will improve their golf and take their game to a whole new level. This is one of the reasons why amateurs never seem to get better. Here is why you should invest in golf lessons. New golf equipment is very nice to have and the improvements in technology do help you to play better, but only to a certain extent. The clubs are only the tool golfers use to play golf. The method or skill behind using the clubs effectively are entirely dependant on the golfer’s ability. So why is it that many golfers buy new clubs rather than invest in golf lessons? I’ll tell you why. It all comes down to image. If you are seen with the latest and best golf clubs, most people assume you to be quite a good player because you look the part. That is until you swing the club. Then the truth comes out and you turn out not to be as good as you appeared to be. This is a problem. I’m not saying don’t buy new golf clubs. Of course you must try have the best equipment available. All I am saying is that you should consider taking some lessons to get the maximum benefit and satisfaction from your clubs. There are many different lessons you can have. They range from personal one-on-one lessons with a recognised teaching PGA Pro, or buying books and dvds that explain graphically how to play better golf. PGA Pro’s are wonderful coaches to have as they are all pretty good players and will help you to correct your swing to play better. The only problem is that they cost a lot of money to hire and are not always available when you need them. Instructional books and dvds are the next best thing to have. The benefits of having them are as follows. You buy them once off, they don’t cost a fortune, they provide great step-by-step instruction and are available for you to refer to whenever you need them. There are many excellent golf instructional dvds and e-books on the market today that can potentially teach you a lot more about he game of golf than any PGA Pro could and these books and dvds cover a wide range of topics to do with golf improvement. So here is a a tip for all amateur golfers who wish to improve their game the cost effective way. Buy golf instructional dvds, e-books and training aids and after watching or reading them practice what they teach at a driving range. If you still struggle with a particular aspect of your game after that, then go visit you local PGA Pro for additional help. To get great golf instruction click on the link below.

If you mean to use your golf cart for more than just off-road activity, or just on the golf course, you can forever make the golf cart avenue legal as long as your local laws will permit it. There are no central laws about the use of golf carts, so regularly the regulations that govern golf carts are made by individual cities and states instead.
There are also plenty of accessories that you can add to your golf cart to personalize it and make it your own. Some of these accessories contain windshields, different kinds of tops and sides, light and greatly more.
When it comes time to pay for your new golf cart, you can imagine the value to descend somewhere in the $5,000 - $10,000 range, though if you select not to add on accessories, and keep the outlay to a bare minimum, you may be able to waste less then $5,000.
Whether or not owning a golf cart will work best for you is a special decision, but for many people a golf cart can roll out to be a time and sweat saving machine both on the course and off.
Now you can be a certain expert on Battery Cart Golf. OK, perhaps not an expert. But you should have something to carry to the register next time you link a discussion on Battery Cart Golf.
Seeing is believing, but sometimes we cant all experience every subject in life. This article hopes to make up for that by providing you with a valuable resource of information on this topic.

As a sport, the entertainment capacity of golf is beyond doubt. However, what a career in golf offers is much more than the entertainment factor. The big daddy of lifestyle sports, golf tenders monetary benefits, fame, travel, freedom and many more objects of desire.
The rewards of a career in the golf industry are numerous. Nothing is more desirable for a golfer than the opportunity to play golf daily and remain connected to it in every sense of the word. A golf job allows you to enjoy an entertainment packed lifestyle and get the advantage of converting your hobby into a rewarding career. For the passionate lovers of the game, a golf job is something that makes their world go round.
The apparent monetary benefits are another great attraction of golf jobs. Where else can you make $500,000 in a week? Besides the hefty prize monies, there are opportunities for lucrative commercial deals as well. Remember, this is the sport that made Tiger Woods the highest paid professional athlete in the world, with an estimated income of $87 million in the year 2005 alone.
Most people do not get to travel enough, even if they want to, just because their jobs don’t allow them to. Here again, professional golfers belong to a different breed. They love to play new courses, and they travel regularly to some of the most beautiful places in the world because their work demands so.
The golf industry offers a lot of career opportunities. Apart from the 18,000 golf courses in the United States, there are numerous affiliated businesses. For any golf job, understanding the industry is as important as understanding the game. Professional schools that specialize in golf are a good place to start. Many world renowned professional golfers have reached where they are today after honing their skills at golf career academies.
Looking at golf from a different perspective, a player’s career is just one of the several opportunities that golf can offer a lover of the game. Those passionate about the game can stay connected to it while applying their professional skills to other aspects linked to it. Golf offers career opportunities in sales, marketing, golf teaching and management. From professional to club house jobs, golf course maintenance to health and leisure jobs, golf can offer wide prospects to an aspirant. So if not a gifted player, you can still tee off a golf career as a golf course manager, a fitness specialist, a sales manager, or a green keeper.
The golf business today and the game itself, seek golf educated professionals. More than an understanding of the game, what you require is comprehensive knowledge in different types of golf facilities and related businesses and operations. For anyone who seeks a golf job, it is as important to acquire this knowledge as the mastery in the game.

Even with simple golf swing lessons, instructional videos and store-purchased aids, your golf game will continue the way it has been without consistent and efficient practice. Consistent because practice sessions involve exercises that are meant to develop muscle memory. Efficient because pacing your energy to the kinds of exercises you will do is important as well.
Simple as this point may sound, it is one that is easily overlooked. Many golfers think that as long as they spend enough time on the practice range, their score will improve. Unfortunately, that is not necessarily so. To improve your golf game as well as your golf swing it is important that your practice sessions be as regimented as the way you play the game itself, or more.
Before you complain about how boring golf swing practices are it might help to think that golf swing practices are what build good playing habits when you hit the greens. If you approach your practice sessions as more than a chore your golf swing training results will provide you more pleasure on the golf course.
Typically, golf practice sessions fall under one of the following three stages:
- Warm-up Stage
- Fresh Stage
- Fatigue Stage
In these three stages you will carry out different sets of golf swing exercises that when done properly will make your practices more effective. This will provide you results you can see on the course as you play.
Warm-up Stage
Many are deceived into thinking that golf requires no strenuous physical activity as it only involves swinging a golf club and walking. Nothing could be further from the truth. The very nature of swinging a golf club causes your muscle groups to work in ways not common to everyday routines.
Your upper torso, arms, and lower back muscles are the groups most impacted when playing golf. In order to avoid injury or strain it is important that you warm up by stretching before you head out on the course.
When stretching it is best that you start from the top of your head and work your way down to your feet. By doing so you will improve flexibility and prepare your muscles for a full range of motion. If you are unfamiliar with stretching exercises you should consult a trainer or the instructor in your club for some recommendations.
Fresh Stage
After your warm-up start working on exercises that build on a skill you have not mastered yet or on parts of your game that have been causing you higher strokes each round. This could be anything from putting to chipping or driving. The idea is that when you work on these problem areas while you are still fresh and limber from a stretch routine, your body responds more positively to the exercises you are doing.
The thing about most people is that their idea of golf swing practice is simply spending time on the driving range without even considering whether or not driving is their problem area. But if you are aware that your short game is what is giving you problems then you should hit the greens to work on your putting as soon as you finish warming up.
Keep in mind that it has been proven that more than 60% of a players golf strokes take place on the green. Unfortunately, this fact is overlooked by many players that result in poor golf practice habits and higher strokes per round!
Fatigue Stage
Once you start feeling winded from the earlier exercises move on to work on facets of your golf game that simply need reinforcement. Since your body already knows this motion this stage in your golf swing practice serves as maintenance to your form.
If any correction is necessary your stressed out body will not adjust to a difficult form. As in the previous example, only after working on your problematic short game can you then go to the driving range to give positive reinforcement to your drives.
In closing, you can show continuous improvement by establishing a good golf practice-to-play ratio such as 2:1 where you invest twice as much time in golf swing training as you do to playing golf. Make sure that you give yourself sufficient time to rest in between exercises and in between stages. While it is a work out you should not be too tired from the activity. Doing so may actually do more harm than good.
If you stick to this simple golf swing training plan you will see improvements in your game. Additionally, you will become a more consistent golfer and will begin to shave strokes off of your golf game.

The Myrtle Beach Golf Course in South Carolina has become famous for the golfing experience there, many people travel to what has become the Grand Strand, specifically for this purpose. The area includes more than one hundred Myrtle Beach Golf Courses throughout, with the golfing being provided on an individual basis and also through golf package deals. It depends on what you are looking for from a Myrtle Beach Golf Course, you will find it here. The Myrtle Beach Golf Course is designed by some of the greats, such as Tom Jackson, P. B. Dye, Clyde Johnston, George Fazio, Rees Jones, Gene Hamm, Fred Couples, William Byrd, David Johnson, and Jack Nicklaus.

The Myrtle Beach Gold Course is well-flattered. The Aberdeen Country Club features the “Meadows”, “Highlands”, and “Woodlands” nines, and has received Golf Digest’s medallions for value and service, as well as the Blackmoor Country Club.

For people who take golf holidays, golf breaks in Scotland represent the quintessential golfing retreat. There are three main reasons for this. Firstly, Scotland has all the best courses - including the world-class Turnberry, St Andrews and Gleneagles, all offering the most fantastic golf holidays available. Secondly, the scenery is unparalleled and provides the perfect backdrop to a round of golf. Scotland’s rugged mountains, lush green valleys, thundering waterfalls and ethereal mists all help to create an experience you can really savour. Thirdly, Scotland always is easy to get to, either by road, train or air travel. Anyone who plans a golf break in Scotland is also probably influenced by knowledge of the country’s long-standing affiliation with the game. It is widely accepted that golf originated in Scotland in the 1100s, with the first recorded game played at Bruntsfield Links in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1456. Even the word ‘golf’ comes from Scotland - it is thought to have come from the Scots word ‘goulf’, meaning ‘to strike or cuff’. When the game was in its early days and, in fact, right up until the mid-20th century, it was usually played with clubs made from hickory wood, which is why golf played with old-fashioned wooden clubs is now called ‘hickory golf’. Traditional hickory golf is catching on in a big way. You see, there’s a big secret haunting the manufacturers of modern golf clubs - despite all the ‘improvements’ in golf club technology, you can hit nearly as far with clubs made the original way - with hickory - as you can with the latest club being promoted on the US PGA Tour. What’s more, with hickory golf clubs you can play the game the way it was designed to be played - playing around the bunkers, through the gaps and really thinking about the challenge of the hole. There are tournaments all over the world for modern-day hickory golf players, and for the last three years one particular tournament has been held in Scotland - golf’s birthplace. The 2007 World Hickory Open took place last month at Craigielaw golf course in East Lothian. As a golf course, Craigielaw is scenically located on the shores of the Firth of Forth with the hills of Fife framing its magnificent backdrop. Craigielaw golf course presents a challenge for both short and long handicap players. As a result, the course is a popular for golf breaks in Scotland for players at every level. The layout at Craigielaw is such that the wind is nearly always part of the course’s natural defence. The consensus among both pro and amateur golf players is that the organisers picked a course almost perfectly suited to hickory golf. There is a special physical sensation that hickory golf clubs give you. You know if you’ve hit a good one just by the lovely feeling coming through your hands and you also know if you’ve hit a bad one (especially in a cold Scottish wind) as it feels like a cricket ball has landed on your knuckles!I managed to come third in the Amateur section, no disgrace but I’m coming back for more. And at last I know what I want from Father Christmas - All the best hickory golf clubs: Persimmon woods with True Temper shafts, a set of matching hickory irons pre-1935, a Cleveland wedge and sand wedge and a Scotty Cameron putter.
